Most times more choices means better choices for consumers, but sometimes more choices just means 'more'. Seemingly determined that they're going to make Apple regret not negotiating with their demands, NBC today announced that they will offer their television content on yet another service, SanDisk's yet-to-be released Fanfare. This should be a note to all video content providers out there, if you run a service, and your name is not Apple, contact NBC immediately, they want to deal. The thing that really doesn't make sense about NBC signing deals with a dozen or so distribution companies is that they seemed serious about making Hulu a real competitor for iTunes in the video content field. But when they've undercut their own business so many times that there is nothing left to cut, it's confusing how they think the service will ever succeed - unless they really believe that is it that good.
NBC had what some would consider a golden ticket for Hulu - their own television content which made up somewhere between 30-40% of iTunes television content. But rather than drive people to Hulu (still in closed beta, but you can check out Open Hulu - a nice workaround) with exclusive rights to that content, they're becoming the town bicycle - everyone gets a ride!
Everyone except Apple that is. Apparently hell hath no fury like a television network scorned.
