Blockbuster Aims For Mobile Movies

Perhaps preempting a play by Apple to get movie rentals on the iPhone, Blockbuster is in talks with major mobile companies about making it easy for customers to watch (and most likely rent) films on their cellphones while on the go.

While details are scant at this point, Blockbuster clearly needs to do something to pull themselves out of the rut they've been in as they continue to bleed money while battling the likes of Netflix and the movie download sites. For the life of me I cannot figure out how it's taken this long for a name synonymous with movies - Blockbuster - to launch an online download alternative, especially after they made a move to buy Movielink. If they can't get that service out the door I'm skeptical that they can successfully launch an entirely new medium.

This next year could be a make or break time for Blockbuster.
