Gmail About to Get A Boost in Storage To Over 4 Gigabytes - 6 Gigabytes By January?

Googlified has run the numbers on the new estimations for Gmail's storage space today and while it seems Gmail will hit 2.912 GB sometime today - much more interesting is that at the current rate Gmail will hit 4.2 GB on the 23rd of this month, and a full 6 GB by January 4th of next year. So, without much fanfare, it appears at least that Gmail is bulking up for the winter.

A move for more storage certainly make sense from Google, especially consider that Yahoo a few months ago launched unlimited email storage, while Microsoft's Hotmail is about to hit 5 gigabtyes for free. If this storage boost is in fact true, it'll be interesting to see what Google does about the whole paying for more storage situation. Right now Google charges $20 a year for 6 gigabytes of storage across your Google accounts - the same amount as would be free in January.

Come on Google, quit teasing us and just release Gdrive already.

[UPDATE]: And yep, I've just been clued into the fact that Google's current paid offerings have been upped as well. Now $20 a year gets you 10 gigabytes, $75 gets your $40 gigs, $250 gets you 150 gigs, and $500 gets you 400 gigabytes of storage! Looks like Gmail will almost for sure be getting more free storage at an increasing rate.

[UPDATE 2]: As sharp-eyed reader Keith notes, the Official Gmail Blog has now confirmed the speed up in counting. Check it out, it's flying! The mark to hit today was 2.912 GB and we're already right now at 2.916 (it may not seem like a lot, but it's going MUCH faster than it was - we've gained over 5 megabytes in a couple of hours). We should be at 3 gigs shortly and 4 gigs within weeks...

[UPDATE 3]: And I think they're still speeding up. We're now at 2917.33 megabytes - strike that, in the time it took to do the update we're past 2917.4, almost at 2917.5....
