Has Twitter Just Twittered the Shark?

Earlier today Twitter added a nice little feature (that was long overdue), the ability to search for other users - but the big news came tonight as it was revealed that Twitter was teaming up with MTV for this year's VMAs (Video Music Awards). This has the ability to make Twitter huge in coveted the 12-18 and ditzy demographic - which in turn could make Twitter very lame, very quickly.

Some would argue that Twitter has been lame from its inception - but I still contend that if used as a massively-multiplayer IM service, Twitter has great potential as a harbinger of breaking news. We've found out about earthquakes, fires, and product launches galore via Twitter. Now the service wants to abandon that so the 15th assistant to 50-cent can wax not-so poetic about how hard it is to pimp (while of course pretending to be 50-cent).

The second the cast members of The Hills start officially Twittering for MTV, I'm out like Seacrest (who will undoubtedly start Twittering as well). Until then you can find me on Twitter here.
