Mr. Google Goes To Washington (To Testify Before Congress)

Things may have just gotten more troublesome for Google. Already under investigation by the FTC, now subcommittees for both the House and Senate are said to be getting ready to call hearings about possible antitrust implications in Google's pending purchase of DoubleClick. Just like Bill Gates a decade ago, Google's executives are expected to be called to testify.

Whether this will be a real-deal investigation or just a chance for a politician to try and make a name for himself on C-SPAN remains to be seen. Though many have expressed concerns about Google's growing power and seeming omnipresence, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone outside of Redmond, Washington who thinks that Google's deal for DoubleClick is on par with Microsoft doing things like making Internet Explorer such an integral part of their operating system a decade ago that you quite literally couldn't remove it - even if you wanted to - in an effort to dominate to up-and-coming world of the web browser by basically default.

The irony of course now is that Microsoft is one of the companies leading the calls for Google's deal to be shot-down via the antitrust folks - while they make a "little" $6 billion dollar deal of their own in the same business that breezes through the FTC. I wonder if Microsoft's lobbyists are still around... (you can bet they are...and that Google has quite a few of their own as well)

Do you think Google will release a special app to follow the Senate and House hearings in real time? A homepage widget perhaps? C-SPAN on YouTube? One thing you can bet on is that you'll be hearing about it on at least one of their 50+ official blogs.
