Big Media Gets In On the Apple Rumor Game with the 'iPhone Nano'
Sometimes it's nice to know you're not alone. Every single day a bunch of us write about Apple rumors, some ridiculous, some completely true, all sure to cause a frenzy of some sort. Now it looks like the traditional media powers are getting in on the game as you couldn't read the news anywhere today without reading about Apple's supposed "iPhone Nano", which isn't yet a product, but rather an analyst speculation.
That's not to say it won't come true, because I absolutely think it will, but the fact that CNN, The Washington Post, MSNBC, and the like are all writing major stories about a rumor speaks to the power of not only Apple, but just how big the iPhone can - and will - be.
If Apple comes out with a cheaper version of the iPhone - as the "iPhone Nano" would be - it's going to be an even bigger wake-up call to other phone handset makers. The iPhone, simply put, makes all other cell phones look like crap. But the other handset makers can still squeak by one two things: 1) it's $500-600 dollars and 2) you can only get it through AT&T. The iPhone Nano would kill off #1 and would simply drive more users to AT&T. The iPhone would go from Steve Jobs hoping to sell 10 million units to the biggest phone in the United States.
The big loser? Verizon. If they really did flat-out turn down Apple on the iPhone, it could very well go down as one of the biggest mistakes in corporate history. I can't wait to see what the first numbers are for people cancelling other services to sign up with AT&T - I know I did, and I know I'm hardly the only one. An "iPhone Nano" would accelerate the pace.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that 99% of the people who I show the iPhone to say that they plan on getting one when it either comes down a bit in price or the iPhone 2.0 comes out. "iPhone Nano" would presumably fulfill both. It's gonna be so huge - and CNN, MSNBC, and The Washington Post all know it just like everyone else.
