Twitter seems to be all over the Internet right now. I felt compelled to write about this after seeing both thomashawk's update on Twitter: "Twitter's the top story on Techmeme right now." and then Scobleizer's: "I'm hanging out with Twitter folks. They are saying hi to the Twitterati. Ev, Biz, and others at Obvious are here. They didn't know Twitter is on Techmeme. Were amazed at the hype/coverage about it."Various stories about Twitter are the leads on Techmeme and Megite right now, and maybe it's just the sites/blogs I read, but it literally seems to be exploding onto the scene with everybody talking about it. Even John Edwards is now using it for his Presidential campaign, and I have no doubt that soon other candidates will jump on board.
You've probably noticed my Twitter Status in the upper-right corner of this site for a few months now but some of you may be wondering what exactly it is. Well, Twitter is a service that allows for live text updates via IM, Text-message, or on their Website. Some people are just using it for updates on what they are doing (a text-version of moblogging) while others use it for a growing trend known as micro-blogging (quick posts to let readers know something).
A few days ago a lot of Twitter users got news of the Scooter Libby guilty verdict on Twitter ahead of the normal news sites updates because it's so simple to write and send an update via Twitter. Before that it was also giving people updates about the medium-sized earthquake in the Bay Area. I think it is absolutely great for things like that.
Case in point, I see right now as I'm writing this post, Scobleizer has an update saying: "New feature coming in Twitter, according to Ev? WAP and grouping." Normally everyone would have to wait for Robert Scoble to get to a computer and type a post about this, but now he can send this quick update via TXT. It's great!
Also check out the SXSW updates on this special Twitter page. As I think Robert Scoble was alluding to in the comment above, there will be more things like this in the future, very cool.
Twitter could be an excellent tool for a number of websites like Facebook (which already has a similar status update that is not nearly as widely used), but I hope it stays independent. I love how simple the site and its interface is right now. Basically everyone's page is the same except for the background color/image which you can customize. There are currently no ads. I love it.
Please feel free to add me as a friend if you use the service, and if you don't, you may want to consider signing up as seemingly all of the rest of the tech, political, and general (there was a live Twitter-cast of the Oscars last month) world is.
